1984年,英國知名樂團「Boomtown Rats」的靈魂人物歌手Bob Geldof親自造訪了非洲乾旱肆虐的伊索匹亞，他親眼目睹饑民困苦的生活，回到英國之後他便於12月份發起英國歌手援助災民的義唱活動,此舉一出,當時的創世紀樂團(Genesis)主唱菲爾柯林斯（Phil Collins）率先響應,因為他看到新聞中伊索匹亞等地區的人民，長期處於飢荒與營養不良而死亡,心裡希望能為他們做些事情。他們將團名取為「Band Aid」。
Band-Aid這個字的原意就是受傷時急救所用的「OK蹦」，而這一個英國歌手的愛心組合「Band Aid」就在1984年的聖誕節前夕齊聚於錄音室，共同錄製了「Do They Know It's Christmas」這首經典名曲，歌曲由Bob Geldof與Midge Ure共同譜寫，集合了當紅的歌壇巨星除了率先響應的菲爾柯林斯外,包括保羅麥卡尼、大衛鮑伊、保羅楊、文化俱樂部合唱團、芭娜娜拉瑪合唱團、史班都芭蕾合唱團、皇后合唱團、WHAM二重唱及都蘭都蘭合唱團等40多位藝人灌錄此曲。「Do They Know It's Christmas」單曲在1985年的12月15日發行後便一舉拿下冠軍，並於1985年7月13日在倫敦、費城兩地同時進行「Band Aid」援非演唱會，他們的義舉也讓國際社會開始重視非洲嚴重的飢荒問題。也因為「Live Aid」出現才引發隔年美國歌手的大團結，由麥可傑克森領軍的「USA For Africa」於焉誕生，一曲「We Are the World」讓為非洲饑民的募款活動達到最高潮。而這首經典義唱「Do They Know It's Christmas」在事隔20年後的2004年也推出了一個紀念版本，由一些新生代的歌手及合唱團演唱重新灌錄，讓音樂界的愛心薪火相傳。

英國歌壇的此項義舉，美國歌唱界自然不落人後，由黑人歌手哈利貝拉方提(Harry Belafonte)提出建議，之後獲得眾大牌歌手的鼎力支持，由昆西瓊斯(Quincy Jones)擔任製作人，在1985年2月28日，45位當紅歌星雲集洛杉磯的錄音室，灌錄了「四海一家」(We are the world)這首義賣單曲。
「四海一家」這首歌是由萊納李奇和麥可傑克森合寫，兩人費了四天的時間寫曲，萊納先完成一部分，麥可看到後靈感大發，一夜之間就把全曲寫好。之後他們又花了兩個半小時作詞，為了普遍推廣此曲，歌詞也力求簡單易學。單曲完成後推出問世，受到的歡迎難以想像，短短數週便賣出八百萬張單曲，更勝英國藝人的「他們知道現在是聖誕節嗎？」。
英美歌壇有了這兩次成功的經驗，認為可以為非洲災民做的更多，於是由英國的鮑伯蓋朵夫繼續擔任召集人，籌畫英美兩地歌星馬拉松式的援非慈善演唱會，演唱會定名為「Live Aid」，於7月13日分別在英國倫敦的溫布利體育館和美國費城的甘迺迪體育館舉行，兩邊接力進行長達十小時的義演。這場演唱會除了吸引爆滿的現場觀眾，還經由七個人造衛星，傳送到全球一百六十幾個國家。負責穿針引線的鮑伯蓋朵夫還因此獲得諾貝爾和平獎的提名。
平心而論，「四海一家」確實是首出色的製作，數十位大牌歌手每人分唱幾句歌詞，要能充分發揮個人特色，又要兼顧歌曲的流暢性，確實不容易，製作人昆西瓊斯功不可沒。
有了前例可循，後來流行音樂界主動出擊義唱的例子也越來越多。包括由威利尼爾森(Willie Nelson)召集美國鄉村歌手援助農民的「Farm Aid」；布魯斯史賓斯汀(Bruce Springsteen)領軍、抗議南非白人政府種族歧視的「Sun City」演唱計劃。國內也有由羅大佑詞曲的「明天會更好」群星義唱，也獲得很好的迴響。如果您記憶力夠好，之後還有「把愛找回來」、「第一種聲音」等公益義賣單曲；紀念天安門事件的「歷史的傷口」等。1999年九二一大地震之後也有多首義賣單曲，只是製作水準良莠不齊，並未受到太大的重視。
